traceroute

Shows the network path toward a host.

traceroute sends probes with increasing TTL values to reveal routers between your machine and a destination.

Syntax
traceroute host

Arguments explained

  • Options adjust output or behavior.
  • Arguments name the files, services, hosts, or values the command should work with.

Common examples

Trace a path
traceroute example.com

Shows hops toward example.com.

Trace by IP
traceroute 1.1.1.1

Avoids needing destination DNS lookup.
