Families are ecosystems, not just file extensions
A Debian-based distribution usually inherits apt and dpkg tooling, .deb package formats, and a large documentation culture around Ubuntu and Debian.
RPM-based systems use rpm packages with managers such as dnf or zypper. Arch-based systems use pacman and rolling repositories. Independent distributions make their own choices, such as Alpine with apk and musl.
| Family | Package tools | Typical strengths | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Debian-based | apt, dpkg | Huge docs, stable bases, beginner options | Debian, Ubuntu, Mint, Pop!_OS, Zorin, Kali, Tails, MX Linux |
| RPM-based | dnf, zypper, rpm | Enterprise workflows, modern desktops, admin tooling | Fedora, Rocky Linux, AlmaLinux, openSUSE |
| Arch-based | pacman | Rolling packages, transparency, strong docs | Arch Linux, Manjaro, EndeavourOS, Garuda |
| Independent | varies | Specialized design choices | Alpine Linux, Gentoo, NixOS, Void Linux, Solus |
