Different security goals need different systems
For normal desktop security, choose a maintained mainstream distribution and update it regularly. Fedora, Ubuntu, Debian, and openSUSE all have credible security practices.
For security testing, Kali Linux is useful in authorized labs. For tiny container images and appliances, Alpine can reduce footprint, but minimalism also means you must understand what you add.
| Goal | Good choices | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday secure desktop | Fedora, Ubuntu LTS, Debian, openSUSE | Maintained repos, security updates, strong defaults |
| Private live sessions | Tails | Amnesic live design and Tor-centered workflow |
| Security testing lab | Kali Linux | Prebuilt tooling for authorized assessment |
| Minimal container base | Alpine Linux | Small attack surface and fast patching |
| Enterprise security practice | Rocky Linux, Fedora | SELinux and RHEL-style concepts |
