Jobs and Background Execution

bg

Resumes a stopped shell job in the background.

bg continues a stopped job while leaving the shell prompt available. It is useful after suspending a foreground job with Ctrl+Z.

Syntax
bg [%job]

Arguments explained

  • %job is an optional shell job number from jobs output.

Common examples

Resume most recent stopped job
bg

Continues the current job in the background.

Resume a specific job
bg %2

Continues job number 2 in the background.
